Men's Tennis Defeats Peace, Falls at Campbell

RALEIGH-BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College men's tennis team split their road matches on Wednesday. They first shutout conference foe William Peace 9-0 before falling 6-1 at D-1 Campbell later in the day.

NCWC 9, WPU 0

In the first match of the day, the Bishops would steamroll the undermanned Pacers losing just one game in doubles and only 4 total in 5 singles matches. Andy Fanzaga won 6-1, 6-1 at the top spot while sophomore Joaquin Micheloni won 6-2, 6-1 at the 2 spot. 

Gustavo Rivas, Valentin Morelli, and Bhodan Zhylchuk then each won their singles matches 6-0, 6-0 at the #3, 4 and 5 spots respectively while Ignacio Alia won by forfeit at the 6 spot.

In doubles, Fanzaga teamed with senior Ingmar Remmerswaal for an 8-1 win at the top line while Alia and Matan Amitay combined to win 8-0 at the two spot with Rivas and Micheloni also winning 8-0 at the 3 spot.

Wesleyan improved to 13-1 and 2-0 in conference with the win while WPU fell to 1-3 and 1-2 in the USA South.

CU 6, NCWC 1

In the Bishop men's second match of the day, 10th ranked Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in doubles after winning two of the three doubles matches, however, Campbell rallied to win all six singles matches in straight sets for the win. Campbell improved to 13-4 on the year.  

Wesleyan's top doubles team of seniors Jhonny Acosta and JP Vallejo won their match 6-4 while senior Roberto Puig and sophomore John Falke fell 2-6 in their match at the 2 line. However, Wesleyan earned a point as the #3 team of juniors Thato Holmes and Tshepo Mosarwa rallied to win 7-6 (7-5 in tiebreaker).

Campbell then took the lead with wins at the #2 (6-3, 6-0 over Falke) and 3 spots (6-2, 6-3 over Puig) while they then clinched the match with singles wins at the #4 (6-2, 6-4 over Augusto Roca) and #5 spots (6-4, 7-5 over Luca Knese). Acosta then lost a close match at the top spot 5-7, 4-6 while freshman Diego Segovia battled back, but fell 1-6, 6-7 at the 6 line.

Wesleyan, now 13-2, will next head to Ohio this weekend for three matches including one against the top ranked team in Div. III, Case Western Reserve.
