Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan Baseball team dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 walk-off loss on the road at rival Methodist on Friday evening.
Senior starter Derrick Carter threw 8 and 1/3 innings before a single and RBI double in the 9th walked off a win for the Monarchs. Carter allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits and 2 walks while striking out six as he fell to 7-2 on the year and a 2.53 ERA with the tough loss.
The game was scoreless until the 6th inning when junior 2B Davie Morgan singled in SS Tyson Bass for the early lead. However, MU would get to Carter in the bottom half scoring three runs (just 2 earned) on an RBI single and back-to-back bases-loaded hit by pitches to take a 3-1 lead.
Wesleyan would tie it back up in the 8th on a Blake Scott sacrifice fly that brought home Morgan while a bases-loaded walk to catcher Jean Lagreca scored 3B Jackson Hobbs to tie the game at three runs apiece.
Morgan led the offense with a three-hit game including two more doubles as he now has 17 on the season while hitting .420. Hobbs also recorded two hits with a double while outfielder Cord Butler knocked two hits and stole a base. Senior outfielder Zach Lyon also registered a hit and stole a base while Lagreca and Bass recorded hits as well in the tough-luck loss.
Wesleyan falls to 23-15 overall and 15-4 in the conference while Methodist improves to 26-12 and moves into first place in the East Division at 16-3.
The teams will play game two of their division series on Saturday at 3:00 PM.
