Virginia Beach, VA - N.C. Wesleyan track and field traveled to Virginia for a competition at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex hosted by the VCU Rams and NCAA Indoor Track & Field has a new 200-meter leader. Freshman
Kamiyah Wooten stormed out the starting blocks in the fastest heat of the 200-meter race with one goal in mind winning the meet.
What came along with that was a new NCAA Division III leading time and USA South Conference Record in the time of 24.69 seconds in her very first collegiate 200 meter race! The field comprised of majority DI and D2 student-athletes, but that did not phase Wooten.
She was followed by Junior
Mariah Brooks who finished 4
th overall in a time of 25.41 and freshman
Ti'Asia Bryant who finished 14
th with a time of 26.21 seconds. The trio of
Kamiyah Wooten,
Mariah Brooks, and
Ti'Asia Bryant also competed in the 60-meter dash finishing 8
th (Wooten), 11
th (Brooks) and (Bryant) 22
nd out of forty student-athletes.
Christian Van Norden also did an outstanding job in the field events by finishing in the top 10 in the shot put. She would go on to finish 8
th place in the final round of the shot put with a new personal best of 11.91 meters (39'1") in a field of twenty-nine participants. Head Coach Bill Dunn was ecstatic after the meet by saying" Our women's team performed very well in the meet. Kamiyah was determined to make a statement, which I could tell in her warm up. She was visually upset about not running what she expected to run in the 60 meters which sparked the extra motivation to do well in the 200-meter race. Our women's team has set high goals for themselves and work hard to achieve them, and have become very close in the last few weeks. They still have work to do but, I'm confident they will achieve them and with the team being so young it took awhile for them to find an identity, but through the grace of God they have!"
The Lady Bishops hold the top three times in the 60-meter dash and the top four times in the 200-meter in the USA South Conference! Wesleyan will compete this upcoming weekend at the University of South Carolina on Saturday.
