Rocky Mount, NC - N.C. Wesleyan University and the Battling Bishop baseball program are deeply saddened by the passing of legendary Hall of Fame coach Tony Guzzo. Coach Guzzo, who led the N.C. Wesleyan baseball program from 1979 to 1982, made an indelible mark on the program and its legacy.
During his four-year tenure in Rocky Mount, Coach Guzzo elevated the Bishops to unprecedented heights. His leadership was recognized with Conference Coach of the Year honors in three of his four seasons. In 1981, he guided the Bishops to its first-ever NCAA Regional appearance, finishing the season with an impressive 33-13 record. Under his stewardship, N.C. Wesleyan baseball earned over 100 victories, laying the foundation for future success.
Coach Guzzo was instrumental in developing some of the finest talent to ever don the Wesleyan uniform. Notably, he coached Greg Clark, Wesleyan's first All-American in baseball, who set a national record with 202 career stolen bases—a feat that remains to this day.
Following his successful stint at Wesleyan, Coach Guzzo went on to have an illustrious coaching career at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and Old Dominion University (ODU), where he further cemented his reputation as one of college baseball's most respected figures. While at ODU, he had the privilege of coaching future Major League Baseball (MLB) Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander. Coach Guzzo also contributed his knowledge and expertise at East Carolina University, NC State University, and even the Boston Red Sox organization.
Coach Guzzo's impact on baseball, both at N.C. Wesleyan and beyond, is immeasurable. His passion, dedication, and commitment to excellence will forever be remembered by all those who had the honor of knowing him and working alongside him.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Coach Guzzo's family, friends, former players, and former colleagues at this time. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched, and he will forever be a part of the Battling Bishop family.
Rest in peace, Coach Guzzo.
