Women’s Tennis Secures USA South Regular Season Championship

Box Score

Rocky Mount, NC - The North Carolina Wesleyan women's tennis team has claimed the 2025 USA South Athletic Conference regular season championship, marking its third straight crown and fifth in the past six seasons. The Battling Bishops completed a perfect 7-0 league slate to remain unbeaten in conference play and solidify its standing atop the USA South once again.

After being picked to finish first in the league's preseason coaches poll, Wesleyan lived up to expectations with a dominant run through the conference schedule. The Bishops received 56 points and seven of eight possible first-place votes entering the year, ahead of Southern Virginia (47 points) and Methodist (44).

One of the defining moments of the championship run came in the regular season finale, where Andrea Elaez Miranda delivered a marquee victory at No. 1 singles against Southern Virginia. Elaez Miranda defeated the three-time USA South Player of the Year to complete an undefeated conference season atop the singles lineup, solidifying her place at the top of the league in singles competition.

"This group has demonstrated poise, maturity, and toughness throughout the season," said head coach Albie Brice. "Our conference continues to improve year over year, and I'm proud of the way our players stepped up in big moments. Andrea's win at the top spot was a great example of the type of fire and focus this team brings. To go unbeaten is a reflection of their discipline and commitment to excellence."

The Bishops, who now sit at 7-6 overall and 7-0 in the USA South, turned in several standout performances in conference play, including 7-0 sweeps over Mary Baldwin, Meredith, Brevard, Salem, Methodist, and Southern Virginia. Wesleyan's only losses this spring came in challenging non-conference matchups against nationally ranked programs such as Johns Hopkins, Christopher Newport, Mary Washington, and Mercyhurst.

Elaez Miranda and fellow standout Bethan Fothergill led the way in singles, with both players going 6-0 in league play. Melanie Guzman Gonzalez and Ivanna Torres have also been key contributors, combining for a perfect 9-0 mark in conference matches. In total, the Bishops went 34-2 in singles and 17-1 in doubles in USA South action.

"Our women's tennis program has become a standard-bearer in the USA South," said N.C. Wesleyan Athletic Director Aaron Denton. "What Coach Brice and our student-athletes have built – and sustained – is incredibly impressive. Their continued success is a reflection of our department's championship culture and the hard work put in every day."

In doubles, Elaez Miranda and Torres formed a formidable pairing, going 8-1 overall and 6-0 in conference, while Fothergill and Renata Torres were also undefeated in USA South play at 6-0.
