Khalid Chavis-Hinds Named USA South Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference

Rome, GA - For the second time in his career, N.C. Wesleyan's Khalid Chavis-Hinds has been named the USA South Defensive Player of the Year, the league announced on Wednesday. Chavis-Hinds, who first earned the honor in 2022-23, once again proved to be a defensive anchor for the Battling Bishops during the 2024-25 season. In addition to his Defensive Player of the Year recognition, Chavis-Hinds was also named First Team All-Conference, highlighting his all-around impact on both ends of the floor.

Chavis-Hinds' defensive presence was evident throughout the season, as he consistently took on the challenge of guarding the opponent's top scoring threat. He tallied 55 steals across 24 games, using his quick hands and defensive instincts to disrupt opposing offenses. His ability to turn defense into offense helped fuel the Bishops' transition game all year long.

Offensively, Chavis-Hinds delivered one of his most productive seasons to date, averaging 14.8 points per game while adding 3.6 rebounds and four assists per contest. He shot 43.4% from the field and an impressive 81.3% from the free-throw line, showing his ability to contribute in all facets of the game.

Head Coach John Thompson praised Chavis-Hinds' consistency and defensive leadership.

"Khalid is the definition of a two-way player," said Thompson. "His defensive intensity sets the tone for us every single game, and his commitment to getting better each season is truly special. To win Defensive Player of the Year twice shows just how much respect coaches around the league have for him."

Chavis-Hinds reflected on the honor and credited his teammates and coaches for pushing him to elevate his game.

"It's a blessing to receive this award again," said Chavis-Hinds. "Defense has always been something I take pride in, and I couldn't do it without my teammates having my back and the coaches trusting me to take on tough matchups. It's all about bringing energy and helping us win games."

The Battling Bishops will face Pfeiffer on Saturday at 6:00 PM in the USA South title game.
