Rochester, NY - North Carolina Wesleyan's Kamiyah Wooten made history at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field National Championships, earning All-American honors in both the 200-meter and 400-meter events. Competing against the nation's best, the sophomore sprinter secured a third-place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 24.34 seconds and placed fourth in the 400 meters at 56.23 seconds, cementing her status as one of the top sprinters in Division III.
Wooten's remarkable performance marks a milestone for Wesleyan track and field, as she continues to make history on the national stage.Â
"I couldn't be more proud of Kamiyah," said N.C. Wesleyan Head Coach Bill Dunn. "Her dedication and work ethic have been phenomenal, and to see it all come together on the national stage is incredibly special. She's setting the standard for our program, and I know this is just the beginning for her."
Wooten's success did not come easy, as she had to navigate through a highly competitive preliminary round before stepping up on the biggest stage of the season. Her time of 24.53 seconds in the 200-meter preliminaries put her in contention for a podium finish, and she delivered in the final with one of her fastest performance of the season. In the 400 meters, Wooten entered as a top contender and showed her resilience by securing fourth place in a stacked field.
"This means so much to me," Wooten said after the race. "To stand on the podium not once, but twice, is an honor. I've put in so much hard work, and I'm just grateful for my coaches, teammates, and everyone who has supported me along the way. This is just the beginning—I'm hungry for more."
N.C. Wesleyan Athletic Director Aaron Denton echoed the praise for Wooten's historic achievement.
"Kamiyah's performance is a defining moment for N.C. Wesleyan Athletics," Denton said. "She has put our track and field program on the national map and demonstrated that our student-athletes can compete at the highest level. We are incredibly proud of her and excited for what's ahead."
With her dual All-American honors, Wooten has set the bar high for the future of Wesleyan track and field. As she turns her focus to the outdoor season, Wooten will look to bring back more hardware back to NCWU.
