John McCarthy served as N.C. Wesleyan head men’s basketball coach from 1977-1985, compiling a 107-108 record during that span. His tenure included a 62-24 record his last three years. 

McCarthy was the first men’s basketball coach at Wesleyan to lead his team to the NCAA Tournament as both his 1982-83 and1983-84 squads played in the “Big Dance”. His 1983-84 squad, in fact, won the Dixie Conference Regular Season and Tournament Championships.

McCarthy was also the Athletic Director during his tenure as the basketball coach, hiring Hall of Fame members Mike Fox, Debbie Allison, and Tony Guzzo.
